What is the difference between an ELD and an AOBRD?
The primary difference between an ELD and an AOBRD (Automatic On-Board Recording Device) lies in functionality and regulatory compliance:
- Data Accuracy: ELDs provide more precise and standardized data.
- Real-Time Synchronization: ELDs must synchronize with a vehicle’s engine to automatically record driving time, while AOBRDs allow for some manual entries.
- Graphical Display: ELDs can display HOS logs in real time, which AOBRDs cannot.
- Compliance Standards: ELDs are designed to meet specific FMCSA technical requirements, whereas AOBRDs were less strictly regulated.
Although AOBRDs were allowed temporarily under the ELD mandate, their usage is now prohibited.
